Apple iMac 1TB Seagate drive recall

Apple has expanded the recall of 1TB Seagate hard drives.  If you have just one, entering the serial number on this page is easy, but if you have multiple iMacs it is easy to find those needing replacement by sending these commands though Apple Remote Desktop.

system_profiler SPSerialATADataType | grep Model
system_profiler SPSerialATADataType | grep Revision

On a machine with a bad drive, you should see something like this:

Model: ST31000528AS
Model: HL-DT-STDVDRW GA32N
Revision: AP25
Revision: KC12

What we care about are the first and third lines, the hard drive model and the firmware.  If you don’t have ST31000528AS, your drive has not been recalled.  If you have ST31000528AS and a revision of AP24 or AP25, it is a bad drive and should be replaced.

Apple is replacing many drives with newer ST31000528AS models, which should not suffer from the same issues.  These drives have a revision of AP63 or similar.

Even though some machines may not show as recalled on Apple’s site, there are at least a few reports of these drives still being present.  In that case, Apple will still replace them.

Just picked up my iMac after replacement. Now I have a:

    Model: ST31000528AS
    Revision: AP2E
    Serialnumber: 5VPD60SE

I don’t know what the previous revision was, but i get the feeling it’s the same drive…
